RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
