Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in any cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Background

This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The wider defence situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
