The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the Britain's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was given the award on 16 October as his new release People Watching was declared the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages played in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Recently, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

He also joined in, collecting more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The money supported venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges arising from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues received funding support in improving facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in big venues backs the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just common sense," the star has said.

He is far from the only musician to contribute his honor funds to good deeds.

Back when they won the trophy in the mid-90s for their album the album, lead singer the singer announced that the act would give their prize money to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her prize among a few good causes, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required updated gear," she told the media.

In recent years, they contributed their winnings to the community center that supported their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," stated artist Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued a couple of small stages in the South East, by bringing them into local control.

The first in that area and the second in that location were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is backed by a national body and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
