The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, anime production is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
